Removals to Chile

The longest sea route on this site and the one whose schedule is set furthest in advance. The inventory is certified through a consular process before departure, and that certification — not a vessel — decides when the container goes.

A consular process cannot be accelerated by a removals firm, an employer or a shipping line.

Who moves this way

  • People relocating to Santiago for work, in mining, energy, finance or professional services.
  • Academics and researchers on fixed-term appointments.
  • Returning Chilean households bringing a UK home back, which has its own document set.

How the goods travel

By sea in a container to San Antonio or Valparaíso, or by air for a small urgent consignment. It is a long crossing and the file is complete before it begins.

From the port, Santiago is a straightforward inland leg on good roads. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are short legs. Destinations north towards Antofagasta or south towards the lakes are substantial journeys planned as part of the movement.

Where we deliver

Santiago Apartment districts with building administration, booked lifts and defined windows.
Las Condes and Vitacura Established residential areas with good vehicle access.
Valparaíso and Viña del Mar Steep hillside streets where the approach decides the vehicle.
The Lake District Long southern journeys, planned as part of the movement.
Antofagasta and the north Mining postings with very long domestic legs from the central ports.

Customs, and who obtains what

Chile grants relief on used household effects for a person taking up residence, claimed against an inventory that must be certified through the Chilean consular route before departure. The certification is the constraint: it takes real time, it cannot be hurried, and the container does not sail without it.

The file, split in two

DocumentObtained byWhat it is
Detailed valued inventory in Spanish Us Prepared and translated here. It is the document the certification attaches to.
Consular certification of the inventory You Obtained through the Chilean consular route before departure. This sets the sailing date.
RUT or tax identification You Required for the clearance and for most things in Chile.
Visa or residence documentation You The status under which you are entering. Immigration advice is not ours to give.
Proof of the Chilean address You Lease or purchase documentation in your name.
Export and import entries Us Lodged by us or our appointed agent against the certified inventory.

Rows marked You attach to you as a person and cannot be obtained on your behalf — they are the items that set the schedule. Rows marked Us are built here from the inventory taken at the survey.

When a document, not a vessel, sets the date

This is the clearest example on the site of the point the whole site makes. On a Chilean move the sailing date is an output rather than an input: the inventory is finalised, translated, submitted for consular certification, and the container is booked once that comes back.

Which means the survey happens early, the inventory is finalised early, and nothing about the schedule can be compressed at the far end to make up for a late start. A firm promising otherwise is describing a process it does not control.

It also means the inventory has to be complete before it is certified. Items added afterwards are genuinely awkward, because the certified document and the container contents are expected to match. The loft, the garage and the shed are therefore surveyed with more care on this route than on any other.

Then the far end. Santiago apartment buildings run on administration offices, booked lifts and defined windows. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are built on hills steep enough that the approach decides the vehicle, and a shuttle from a level standing point is frequently the plan rather than the fallback.

And the distances. A posting to the north or the far south adds a domestic leg measured in many hundreds of kilometres, planned and quoted as part of the movement. Nothing on this page is immigration, tax or legal advice.

Questions on this route

01 Why does certification set the sailing date?

Because the container is booked once the certified inventory comes back rather than before. On this route the sailing is an output of the paperwork, not an input to it.

02 Can the process be hurried?

Not by us, not by an employer and not by a shipping line. It is a consular process with its own timescale, and any firm suggesting otherwise is describing something it does not control.

03 What if we want to add things later?

It is genuinely awkward, because the certified inventory and the container contents are expected to match. That is why the loft and the garage are surveyed with extra care here.

04 What is access like in Valparaíso?

Steep. The hills decide the vehicle, and a shuttle from a level standing point is frequently the plan rather than the fallback. Photographs of the approach settle it in advance.

05 How far is the inland leg?

Short to Santiago and the central coast. A posting north to Antofagasta or south to the lakes adds many hundreds of kilometres, planned as part of the movement.

06 Should we ship appliances?

Chile runs a different plug standard and voltage from the UK. Small items with adaptors are workable; large appliances rarely justify space on a crossing this long.

Moving to Chile?

Both addresses, roughly what is going, and where you are in the paperwork. We will build the schedule backwards from the document that heads it.
