Building the schedule backwards from the card
The useful way to plan this route is backwards. Work out when the residence card is realistically likely to be issued, and let that date set the sailing rather than the other way round. It is obvious written down and it is almost never how the sequence actually runs.
What normally happens instead is that a start date is agreed, a shipping date is booked to suit it, and the residency process runs in parallel on somebody else's timescale. When the two do not meet, the container sits at the receiving end accruing storage and demurrage — and those charges belong to you rather than to the shipping line or to us.
Where the dates genuinely cannot be aligned, holding the goods in the UK is nearly always cheaper than holding them at the far end, and they stay under an agreement you have actually read. We will recommend that rather than let a container sail into a wait.
Two other items sit early on the schedule. The controlled list, which is stricter than the European norm and catches ordinary household things, is reviewed at survey. And if an employer is paying, check whether the package covers storage and demurrage at destination — a great many do not, and on this corridor that is the exclusion likeliest to bite.
